LIFE SUSTAINABILITY IS THE GOAL :

What you can do - 7 Sustainable Steps

Making home a safer and more sustainable place for you and your family is a matter of simple choices that can make a big difference.

1. CONSERVATION – INCREASE EFFICIENCY

  • Seal Cracks
  • Lose the Plastic
  • Buy recycled paper
  • Conserve on Gas:
    • Walk or Ride Your Bike
    • Use Public Transportation
    • Drive at the speed limit
  • Conserve on Electricity:
    • Adjust your thermostat just 2 degrees
    • Turn off lights and appliances
    • Replace light bulbs with energy qualified CFL (compact fluorescent lights).
  • Conserve Water:
    • Be aware of running water
    • Maximize laundry and dish wash loads
    • Use sprinklers less
    • Look for Energy Star Qualified appliances

2. RECYCLE

America generates approximately 400 billion pounds of trash annually. Forty percent is paper/cardboard, 18% is yard waste, 9% metals and 8% plastic. WHERE DOES IT ALL GO? More than 70% is buried in the earth, we call it Landfills. We now recycle 27% of our trash. If we could increase to 35% the EPA says our greenhouse gases would be reduced by as much as if nearly 7 millions cars were taken off the road.

3. CLEAN GREEN

Common household chemicals can be hazardous to your health. Natural solutions are far more economical. Try baking soda, white vinegar, lemon juice, borax, vegetable-based liquid soap and washing soap. Old fashioned cleaning doesn’t require any secret chemical formulas.

4. FURNISH FOR HEALTH.

The furniture around you may have an impact on your health. According to the EPA, your indoor environment may be as much as five times more polluted than the air outside. Some household items to consider: interior furnishings, bedding, paint, carpet, stains, glues, formaldehyde-based anything. www.wellbuilding.com is designed to help people with chemical sensitivities connect with resources that may help rebuild wellness.

5. BREATHE EASIER

Simple ways to reduce indoor pollution in your home:

  • Ventilation and air filtration
  • Fans (window or whole house)
  • Houseplants
  • Control Radon Gas
  • Use a high-efficiency (HEPA) Vacuum

6. SAY 'NO' TO DISPOSABLES

All kinds of disposable products include: cups, plates, utensils, razors, food packaging, paper goods, grocery bags, dust mops, mop heads, toilet brushes, etc…

7. GREEN YOUR YARD

Natural and organic gardening and lawn care will go a long way toward impacting your home environment and the earth. Rethink: Fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides.

  • Hand pull weeds vs. spraying
  • Natural fertilizer vs. synthetic fertilizer
  • www.gardensalive.com – you can find an organic version of anything you need to maintain a beautiful lawn and garden.
